2024 New Skater Intake Dates: Sat. 9/28, Mon. 9/30 & Sat. 10/5

We hold our new skater intake called Derby 101 each year. This introductory bootcamp is designed to teach skating fundamentals while building the strength and endurance necessary to play a full-contact sport. No prior skating experience required! Many of our skaters had never been on skates when they started! If you do have skating experience, DERBY 101 is still a great fit for you, because it will teach you derby-specific skating skills and help to build your strength and endurance.

In addition to the introductory practices, we host a gear workshop, skater meet-and-greet happy hour, cross-training homework plan, and a private Facebook group ask questions and provide community support as you train. Follow us on social media for announcements about upcoming intakes!

Skates and protective gear are available to borrow. Mouthguard required!

Rec Skating / Open Practice

(Jan. 2024 update: Rec on pause until further notice)

Rec’ing Krewe sessions run year-round on Wednesday nights from 6:30 – 8:30.

Fill out the form below to get started, and join the facebook group for updates!

The Big Easy Roller Derby Rec’ing Krewe is a recreational roller derby league consisting of those who have never skated, but are interested in learning about roller derby, veteran skaters looking to keep a small amount of roller derby in their lives, and others who are looking for an opportunity for exercise and fun. All men and women over 18 are eligible to play, no matter your skating experience!

How it Works

Open practices or free skates are held on Wednesday nights at the BERD Warehouse from 6:30 – 8:30 PM.  It is a $5 drop-in fee per person if you are not a BERD member. It is free for BERD members

What You Need

You will need quad roller skates (no roller blades), knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, a helmet, and a mouth guard. We are lucky enough to have a derby store nearby to help with all of your gear questions – Skates may need to be ordered from the manufacturer – so the sooner you stop in the better!

Volunteer as a Non-Skating Official (NSO)

Want to be involved but don’t want to skate? We’re always on the lookout for more EMTs, refs, scorekeepers, concession stand workers, penalty box timers, photographers, videographers, and more! If you’ve got the time, we’ll find you a job. 🙂
